Weekly Meme Coin Data Report 2026-09-06 ~6 min read

Weekly Meme Coin Data Report — 8.31–9.6, 2026

The first unanimous week in a month: all eight board members closed green, the combined cap rose from $20.1B to $22.2B (+10.4%), and the recovery ranked exactly by how badly each coin had fallen in August.

Method: prices are UTC daily closes from CoinMarketCap, CoinGlass, CoinLore and BitKan history pages; weekly change is close-to-close between the boundary dates; the combined board cap sums our eight members' tracker caps on each boundary date. Every figure is re-derivable from the Sources links in minutes — that is the standard.

1. Core metrics — week-over-week

MetricAug 30Sep 6Change
Board combined market cap (8 tokens)$20.11B$22.19B+10.4%
DOGE close$0.08210$0.09082+10.6%
DOGE market cap$14.07B$15.58B+10.7%
Board equal-weighted close change——+9.8% avg (8 of 8 green)

The board erased most of the prior week's -5.6% and then some. Context that keeps it honest: the Sep 6 close of $22.19B now stands 4.1% above the August 23 sum of $21.31B — meaning the rebound week did more than recover the washout; it pushed the board back above where the August 21 squeeze had left it. What it did not do is approach the squeeze highs themselves.

2. The eight-token board — closes and weekly change

CoinAug 30 closeSep 6 closeWeekly change
BONK$0.00000279$0.00000341+22.2%
DOGE$0.08210$0.09082+10.6%
SHIB$0.000004952$0.000005525+11.6%
FLOKI$0.0000239$0.0000264+10.5%
PEPE$0.000003405$0.00000365+7.2%
SPX$0.5390$0.5770+7.1%
WIF$0.1894$0.2030 (Sep 5)+7.2%
PENGU$0.00861$0.00878+2.0%

WIF's Sep 6 cell carries a Sep 5 date because its history pages had not published a Sep 6 close in the windows we check; we print the latest available close and date it rather than interpolate. PENGU's +2.0% after a +46% August is the calmest print on the board — flagged, not buried, in the shape-of-the-week section.

3. What the shape of the week says

  • The recovery ranked by prior damage. The August 24–30 losers led: BONK (-14.7% then, +22.2% now), PENGU's cohort aside, FLOKI (-11.2% then, +10.5% now). Beta mean-reverted, which is what a squeeze-unwind recovery looks like on paper.
  • The exceptions are the information. PENGU — August's best net performer — gained just 2.0%. Strong hands do not need a bounce week; the holder-count data next week confirms whether that read holds.
  • DOGE's two-day reclaim was the week's highest-conviction print: +5.7% on Sep 5 and +1.3% on Sep 6 on $1.0–1.3B daily volume (CoinMarketCap) — the heaviest volume since the August 21 squeeze, arriving on a recovery rather than a spike.
  • Nothing about the week looked organic at the top of the board — BONK's +22.2% came with the sector's thinnest books, and leaders bought on the thinnest liquidity are the first to give it back. That is a description, not a prediction; the following week scored it for us.

4. Three-week pattern: the rebound leg

WeekBoard capWeek changeCharacter
Aug 24–30$20.11B (from $21.31B)-5.6%7 of 8 red; SPX only green
Aug 31 – Sep 6$22.19B+10.4%8 of 8 green; BONK +22.2% led
Sep 7–13published next week——

The sequence that matters: the board bottomed at $20.11B, 5.6% under the pre-washout level, and the entire recovery happened in five sessions (Sep 2–6). Fast recoveries that overshoot their base tend to retest it — the retest is scheduled, in effect, and it arrived on time the following week.

5. Where the gains concentrated

CohortMembersWeek changeReading

Ethereum culture namesPEPE, SPX+7.1% to +7.2%Mid-pack; PEPE's whale overhang capped the bounce
August winnersPENGU+2.0%Digestion, not participation

6. Supply-side watch

  • 1.008T SHIB entered BitGo custody during the week (600B Sep 1 + 408B Sep 6, Arkham-tagged) — the largest verified custody migration of the quarter, invisible on the chart.
  • SHIB exchange reserves sat near 87.2T through the week, roughly 14.8% of circulating supply — and about to shrink.
  • PEPE's mid-whale cohort continued the distribution that began August 25 (80B tokens by September 10, per Santiment) — the reason PEPE's bounce was capped at +7.2% while smaller names ran hotter.

7. What would change our read

  • A board close back under $20.1B would reclassify this week as a bear-market rally rather than a recovery leg.
  • DOGE holding $0.09 on closes for three sessions would confirm the reclaim as support rather than a spike top.
  • The BitGo SHIB complex moving to exchanges would convert the month's biggest custody story into the month's biggest supply story — directionally decisive for SHIB's next leg.
  • BONK giving back more than half its week on thin books would confirm the liquidity-air-pocket read on the board's leader.

8. Methodology & data notes

  • Closing prices: CoinMarketCap (DOGE, SHIB, PEPE), CoinGlass (PENGU, SPX, WIF), CoinLore (FLOKI), BitKan/TokenInsight (BONK). History pages linked in Sources.
  • Board cap = sum of member caps on each tracker's own figure, at each boundary date. BONK's cap varies by up to ~15% across trackers (circulating-supply estimates); we use close × ~88.8T consistently.
  • The board: DOGE, SHIB, PEPE, PENGU, SPX, BONK, FLOKI, WIF — the eight largest meme assets excluding wrapped/pegged duplicates (Forbes category order).
  • Weekly change is close-to-close. No interpolation, no estimates; where a close is missing we date the latest available one in the table.

FAQ

The board rose 10.4% — why does the report sound cautious?

Because the composition of a gain tells you its durability. The week's leaders were the thinnest books (BONK +22.2%), the recovery needed five sessions to do what five days of selling had undone, and the largest custody migration of the quarter happened underneath it unnoticed. None of that makes the week fake — it makes it a rebound with specific, watchable failure conditions.

Why does WIF's row say Sep 5?

Its public history pages had not published a September 6 close in the windows we check at press time. We print the latest available close and date it. Substituting a live price would be easier and unverifiable tomorrow; dating the close keeps every cell checkable forever.

What does 'the recovery ranked by prior damage' mean?

Exactly what it sounds like: the washout's most-beaten dog led the rebound (BONK, -14.7% then +22.2% now), August's quiet giant sat it out (PENGU, -13.4% then +2.0%), and the month's leader only matched the bottom half (SPX, +70.6% in August, +7.1% this week). That ordering is the fingerprint of beta mean-reversion — short covering and risk-appetite restoration — rather than fresh, differentiated demand.

Is the SHIB custody migration bullish or bearish?

Undetermined by the evidence so far, and we will not pretend otherwise. Coins in custody have not been sold; exchange reserves actually fell during the week. What is factual: 1.008 trillion SHIB — 0.17% of circulating supply — changed hands into a structure where its next move will be visible. The resolution will be unambiguous when it comes.

How do I verify the board cap myself?

Sum the eight caps on Aug 30 closes from the linked history pages (≈$20.1B), then on Sep 6 closes (≈$22.2B). The +10.4% is the arithmetic between those sums. If your sums differ, check the as-of dates you used — that is the only free variable in the calculation.
