Meme Coin Weekly News Review — 8.31–9.6, 2026
10 verified stories from Aug 31 – Sep 6: the first all-green board week in a month, BONK leads at +22.2%, Shibarium's upgrade lands while its burn tracker goes dark, and 1.008 trillion SHIB quietly enters BitGo custody.
Same process as every week: pull every meme-relevant item we can find, deduplicate, score each for on-chain and market impact, cross-check the numbers against a second source, then comment. This week we started from 22 raw items, dropped 12 as duplicates or single-source noise, and kept 10. The theme: the sector's first unanimous week in a month — eight up, zero down — with the most consequential supply story of the quarter happening where nobody was looking.
1. The week in one paragraph
2. The ten stories
1. Shibarium upgrade went live with nine verified contracts (SHIB)
U.Today reported on September 4 that the Shibarium upgrade had gone live with nine contracts verified, per a confirmation from a long-time Shiba Inu community figure. The upgrade is the latest step in the layer-2's build-out, separate from the token burn plumbing that runs alongside it.
Our take: infrastructure news does not move price on its own — SHIB still needed the whole board's risk-on week to gain 11.6%. But verified contracts are checkable facts, unlike most of what moves this sector, and the upgrade landed in the same week the burn tracker went dark (story 8). Net: one step forward, one dashboard blinking.
2. An early 'trillionaire' whale parked 600 billion SHIB in BitGo custody (SHIB)
Arkham-tagged flows documented by KuCoin and BSCN show 600 billion SHIB arriving at a BitGo WalletSimple multisig on September 1 from an early ecosystem whale. Together with a second 408 billion deposit on September 6, the custody wallet absorbed just over 1 trillion SHIB inside six days.
Our take: trillion-token deposits are quarter-of-a-percent-of-supply events, and custody is where they wait before becoming anything — sell pressure, OTC blocks, or cold storage. We treated this as the week's most consequential SHIB story precisely because nothing visible happened on the chart.
3. A dormant whale woke up: 408 billion SHIB moved after ~3 years (SHIB)
A wallet inactive since July 2023 transferred approximately 408 billion SHIB — worth about $2.21–2.23M at the time — to the same BitGo custody address on September 6, per Arkham data cited by KuCoin and later covered by AInvest.
Our take: coins from 2023 are 'old supply' by meme-coin standards; their reawakening usually marks either tax/estate housekeeping or the start of distribution. Both prior legs went to custody first, which keeps the option open. We publish the flow; the intent, honestly, is unknowable from the chain alone.
4. BONK led the board: +22.2% on the week (BONK)
BONK closed at $0.00000341 on September 6 against $0.00000279 a week earlier — +22.2% close-to-close (BitKan and TokenInsight daily tables agree), the best week of any board member. Its best day was September 5. Market-cap trackers still disagree on BONK's cap — for the same September 6 close the spread runs from roughly $258M on smaller circulating-supply estimates to the ≈$303M our own basis (close × ~88.8T) prints.
Our take: when the smallest liquid dog coin leads a recovery week, the bid is retail risk appetite returning, not institutional accumulation. That is a descriptive claim, not a knock — but it does mean BONK will also lead on the way back down, which is exactly what happened the following week.
5. SPX6900's +13.7% day set up the month's biggest round-trip (SPX)
CoinGlass daily data shows SPX jumping 13.7% on September 3 to $0.608 on a 14.2% intraday range, then stalling: -1.1% on September 4 and a $0.577 close on September 6 — still +7.1% for the week, seventh of eight on the board.
Our take: a 14% range inside a green day is momentum and liquidation fuel, not steady demand. SPX's week was real but fragile — proven by the following week, when it handed back nearly everything. We noted the fragility then; we are not claiming foresight now, the range told us.
6. DOGE needed just two days to reclaim $0.09 (DOGE)
After finishing August at $0.0821, Dogecoin climbed 5.7% on September 5 to $0.0897, then another 1.3% on September 6 to close the week at $0.0908 (CoinMarketCap daily closes) — back above the round number that had capped it in late August, and +10.6% for the week on volume near $1.0–1.2B/day.
Our take: the fastest two-day move in DOGE since the August 21 spike, on volume, is a genuine momentum signal — but round numbers are where momentum goes to be tested. $0.09 held for exactly five more sessions before the September 11–12 slide. Recoveries that stall at the round number are the pattern to respect.
7. PEPE bounced with the board — and got rejected anyway (PEPE)
PEPE printed its week's best day on September 3 (+8.4% to $0.00000371, CoinGlass), fell 5.0% the next day, and settled at $0.00000365 by September 6 — +7.2% on the week, mid-pack. The bounce never threatened the 200-day EMA near $0.00000364 that would define the following week's ceiling.
Our take: a mid-pack week for the board's highest-beta name is itself the signal: PEPE was recovering less than smaller names (BONK +22.2%) despite larger retail mindshare. Under-the-hood, the whale distribution that Santiment later quantified (80B tokens since August 25) was already running through this bounce.
8. Shibarium's burn tracker went dark (SHIB)
BSC News reported on September 5 that the public page tracking SHIB burns through Shibarium had stopped displaying figures and was returning an error. The last widely cited confirmation was the 1-billion-SHIB milestone from May 2025; no official explanation of the outage was published during the week.
Our take: burn dashboards are marketing infrastructure as much as data infrastructure, and a silent outage invites the worst kind of speculation. We will not publish burn estimates ourselves until a primary source resumes — and we think every outlet that reprints burn numbers should say where they currently come from. Ours: nowhere, because there is nowhere.
9. PENGU lapped the field in calm (PENGU)
Pudgy Penguins moved just +2.0% for the week (CoinGlass: $0.00861 → $0.00878), the board's smallest gain, after a wild August that included a +24.2% squeeze day on August 21 and a further +11.4% into the August 23 close. Its daily ranges during the week stayed mostly under 5%.
Our take: after a +46% August run (Aug 16 $0.00591 → Aug 30 $0.00861), a quiet green week with compressed ranges is textbook digestion. The holder-count trend (story 10, next week) suggests the digestion is accumulative rather than distributive. No trade in it — just the healthiest chart shape on the board.
10. FLOKI quietly strung together four green days (FLOKI)
FLOKI rose on four of six sessions — including +6.2% on September 3 and +4.8% on September 5 (CoinLore daily table) — closing the week at $0.0000264, +10.5%, its best close since August 25.
Our take: steady, unremarkable, un-hyped — and exactly the profile that survives reversal weeks. FLOKI gave back a similar share the following week (-7.2%), which is less about the coin and more about the board: in a sector this correlated, the entry matters more than the pick.
3. The week in nine figures
| # | Figure | Value | Dated | Source |

4. Fact-check notes
| Claim in circulation | Our check | Verdict |
|---|---|---|
| 'Meme season is back' (multiple aggregator posts) | Board +10.4% but still below the Aug 23 close of $21.3B; the Aug 21 squeeze high ($15.6B DOGE cap alone) untouched | Overstated — a rebound inside a range, not a regime change |
| 'A whale is dumping SHIB' | All confirmed legs went to BitGo custody; exchange reserves fell 0.2% to 87.23T over the window | Unsupported so far — custody migration, not market selling |
| 'Shibarium upgrade is SHIB's bull case' | Nine verified contracts is real, checkable progress; price still needed the whole board's bid to gain 11.6% | True but insufficient — infrastructure, not a catalyst |
| 'Burn tracker outage means burns stopped' | The dashboard is offline with an error page; no primary source states burns stopped or continued | Unknowable — and we publish no burn figures until a primary source returns |
5. The week ahead on the watchlist
- The BitGo complex's next move. 1.008T SHIB in custody, and custody is where decisions wait. First movement to an exchange or OTC-tagged address resolves the month's biggest supply question.
- DOGE at $0.09. Reclaimed September 5–6 on the board's heaviest volume. Round numbers that flip from resistance to support — or fail to — decide whether the rebound has a floor.
- BONK's follow-through. The smallest liquid dog coin led the week (+22.2%); in this sector the leader of a recovery week usually leads the next drawdown. We will score that call next week.
- Burn tracker restoration. If the page returns with a methodology note, the outage was plumbing. If it returns silently rebased, the burn narrative has a credibility problem.
6. What we left out — and why
- A 'SHIB to $0.00001' projection circulating on prediction aggregators: a price target, not an event. We cover prints, not wishes.
- A screenshot of a 'massive DOGE accumulation' wallet: traced to an exchange hot wallet receiving user deposits. Custody plumbing is not conviction.
- An unsourced claim that the burn tracker outage 'hides a 40% burn surge': no primary data exists to check it against, which is exactly why the outage matters.
7. How We Select and Verify
- Collect from our source whitelist — explorers, aggregators, trackers, and project-owned channels only.
- Deduplicate. The Shibarium upgrade generated five near-identical posts across aggregators.
- Score each item: does it move on-chain state, and does it move price beyond what the broader board explains.
- Cross-check every number against a second whitelisted source (this week: the custody flows against Arkham tags on two independent outlets' tallies).
- Comment last, and only where we can say something the number does not already say.
- Cut anything that survives only on a single anonymous claim — and publish the cut list so you can see what we threw away.

FAQ
Why does an all-green week get a cautious review?
Because the level matters as much as the direction: the board's $22.2B close is still below the August 23 close of $21.3B's neighborhood on a weekly-continuity basis and far below the August 21 squeeze highs. A rebound inside a range is a different trade from a breakout above one, and the difference is the whole point of printing levels instead of vibes.
What is the single most important thing that happened this week?
The 1.008 trillion SHIB custody migration. Price events revert; ownership events persist. Two legacy whales converging on one custody address inside six days is a supply-structure event that will price SHIB long after this week's green candles are forgotten.
Is the Shibarium upgrade bullish?
It is real, verifiable progress — nine contracts on-chain. It is also not a price catalyst: SHIB gained 11.6% only because the entire board rose. We file infrastructure under 'background', where it compounds quietly, and we decline to translate it into a price call.
Why did you cover a dashboard outage as a story?
Because the burn tracker is the sector's most-cited transparency artifact, and its silent failure is itself data. Until a primary source resumes with a stated methodology, every burn figure circulating is unchecked — including the ones that would flatter SHIB. We publish nothing we cannot trace.
How do I verify the +10.4% board figure?
Sum the eight members' caps on the Aug 30 closes (each history page is linked in Sources) — you should land near $20.1B — then repeat on the Sep 6 closes, landing near $22.2B. The percentage is arithmetic on public numbers, not our model output.
