Weekly Meme Coin Data Report — 9.7–9.13, 2026
The eight-token board fell from $22.2B to $19.4B (-12.5%) on UTC closes, erasing most of the prior week's +10.4% rebound. Every closing print was red except WIF's trailing-7-day live read; SPX led the fall at -13.0%.
Method first, because every claim below depends on it: prices are UTC daily closes from CoinMarketCap, CoinGlass, CoinLore and BitKan history pages (linked in Sources); weekly change is close-to-close between the boundary dates; the combined board cap is the sum of our eight members' tracker caps on the latest published close at or before each boundary. Where a coin's history page had not yet published a Sep 12 close at press time (SHIB, FLOKI: Sep 11; PENGU: Sep 8; BONK, WIF: Sep 7), we use that close and date it in the table. No estimates, no interpolated numbers.
1. Core metrics — week-over-week
| Metric | Sep 6 | Sep 11–12 | Change |
|---|---|---|---|
| Board combined market cap (8 tokens) | $22.19B | $19.43B | -12.5% |
| DOGE close | $0.09082 | $0.08485 (Sep 12) | -6.6% |
| DOGE market cap | $15.58B | $13.23B | -15.1% |
| Board equal-weighted close change | — | — | -5.4% avg (7 red closes + WIF live read) |
The week undid the prior week's rebound almost exactly: the board's +10.4% climb from $20.11B to $22.19B reversed to $19.43B, which is 3.4% below where the August 30 close sat. Three weeks, three directions: -5.6%, +10.4%, -12.5%. A descending staircase of volatility, not a trend.
2. The eight-token board — closes and weekly change
| Coin | Sep 6 close | Week-end close (as-of) | Weekly change |
|---|---|---|---|
| DOGE | $0.09082 | $0.08485 (Sep 12) | -6.6% |
| SHIB | $0.000005525 | $0.000005172 (Sep 11) | -6.4% |
| PEPE | $0.00000365 | $0.00000340 (Sep 12) | -6.8% |
| PENGU | $0.00878 | $0.00833 (Sep 8) | -5.1% |
| SPX | $0.577 | $0.5021 (Sep 12) | -13.0% |
| BONK | $0.00000341 | $0.00000316 (Sep 7) | -7.3% |
| FLOKI | $0.0000264 | $0.0000245 (Sep 11) | -7.2% |
| WIF | ($0.2030 Sep 5 / $0.2160 Sep 7) | +9.2% trailing 7d (live Sep 15) | green |
WIF's row is different on purpose: its history pages had no Sep 6–12 closes published at press time, so we quote Forbes' live trailing-7-day read (+9.23% as of Sep 15, cap ≈$214M) instead of inventing a closing print. It is the only green row on the board either way.
3. What the shape of the week says
- The breakdown was orderly, not panicky. DOGE's worst day was -4.0% (Sep 11, close $0.08428 from $0.0878's false break of $0.09); PEPE's worst was -6.9% (Sep 10). Nothing on the board printed a -15% day.
- Volume told the same story. DOGE traded $929M on the Sep 11 break, then $346M on Sep 12 (CoinMarketCap) — conviction thinned as price fell, the opposite of capitulation's signature.
- The damage was proportional to the prior week's gain. BONK (+22.2% the week before) fell 7.3% on its latest close; PENGU (+2.0% prior week) fell 5.1%. The board did not discriminate randomly — it unwound in the order it had risen.
- SPX is the exception that proves it. It rose +7.1% in the rebound week and fell the most this week (-13.0%), completing the cleanest round-trip on the board.
4. Three-week pattern: a failed V
| Week | Board cap | Week change | Character |
|---|---|---|---|
| Aug 24–30 | $20.11B (from $21.31B) | -5.6% | 7 of 8 red; SPX only green |
| Aug 31 – Sep 6 | $22.19B | +10.4% | 8 of 8 green; BONK +22.2% led |
| Sep 7–13 | $19.43B | -12.5% | 7 of 8 red; WIF only green (live read) |
Read the three weeks together and the market's message is unambiguous: the September bounce could not hold above the August 30 base. $19.43B is 3.4% below $20.11B. The rebound tested the base from above, failed, and the failure took six sessions.
5. Versus the broader market
Bitcoin closed September 12 near $77,310, up modestly on the day and described by Moneynomical's wrap (Yahoo Finance data) as a 'quiet, broadly positive' session — nine of ten tracked majors gained. The meme board fell 12.5% into that backdrop. This is rotation within risk, not risk-off: money left the highest-beta corner while the anchor held. The last time the two diverged this hard in opposite directions was the August 24–30 week, and the board mean-reverted upward the following week — though a single precedent is a observation, not a law.
6. Level watch
| Level | Why it matters | Status at week-end |
|---|---|---|
| DOGE $0.08 | Round-number floor; the August base sat just above it | $0.08485, cushion 6% |
| SHIB $0.000005 | Defended Aug 30; 200-day MA region above | $0.000005172 (Sep 11) — 3.4% above |
| PEPE $0.00000364 | 200-day EMA, rejected Sep 9 | Closed below at $0.0000034 (Sep 12) |
| SPX $0.52 | September 12 low $0.4664 intraday | Closed $0.5021 — inside the air pocket |
7. What would change our read
- A board close back above $20.1B (the August 30 base) on rising combined volume would invalidate the failed-V read.
- DOGE holding $0.08 on a daily-close basis for three sessions would mark the first higher low since the September 11 break.
- PEPE's 10M–100M cohort flipping to net accumulation (Santiment cohort data) while price reclaims the 200-day EMA — the two have not aligned positively since August 25.
- Bitcoin losing $75,000 would reframe the meme drawdown as part of a broader risk-off rather than sector rotation — and would remove the 'rotation' thesis from this report entirely.
8. Methodology & data notes
- Closing prices: CoinMarketCap (DOGE, SHIB, PEPE), CoinGlass (PENGU, SPX, WIF), CoinLore (FLOKI), BitKan/TokenInsight (BONK). Cross-checks noted in [market_intelligence] where sources differ.
- Board cap = sum of member caps on each tracker's own figure. BONK's cap varies by up to ~15% across trackers because circulating-supply estimates differ; we use close × ~88.8T circulating consistently and say so.
- The board is the eight largest meme assets by market cap excluding wrapped/pegged duplicates: DOGE, SHIB, PEPE, PENGU, SPX, BONK, FLOKI, WIF (Forbes meme-category order).
- All history pages are linked in Sources. Every figure in this report can be re-derived from them in minutes.

FAQ
Why does the report use closing prices instead of live prices?
Because closes are checkable forever. A live price matches only the second you read it; a UTC daily close on a public history page can be re-verified months later by anyone. Our weekly comparisons are all close-to-close for exactly that reason.
Why is the combined board cap not the whole meme sector?
Because 'the whole meme sector' depends on a tracker's inclusion rules — Forbes' table, CoinGecko's category and CoinMarketCap's category disagree on membership and on wrapped tokens. Summing our fixed eight members with dated as-of points is narrower but reproducible. We label it 'board combined cap' everywhere so it is never confused with a sector total.
SHIB and FLOKI show Sep 11 closes while DOGE shows Sep 12 — is that sloppy?
It is honest. At press time those history pages had not published a Sep 12 row. Substituting a live read would make the number unverifiable tomorrow; dating the last published close keeps every cell checkable. The as-of date is printed in the table for every such row.
The prior week's report said +10.4%; this one says -12.5%. Is the board just noise?
Three weeks of -5.6%, +10.4%, -12.5% is high volatility, but it is structured noise: the unwind ran proportional to the prior week's gains, the volume thinned as prices fell, and the whole move happened while Bitcoin held level. Structure is what separates a readable market from a random one.
How do I verify the -12.5% board figure myself?
Sum the eight caps on Sep 6 closes (linked in Sources) — you should land near $22.19B — then repeat with each coin's latest published close at or before Sep 12, landing near $19.43B. The deltas are the arithmetic of the report; if your sum differs materially, check which as-of dates you used, because that is the only free variable.
