Weekly Meme Coin Data Report — 8.24–8.30, 2026

Seven of eight board members closed red as the August 21 squeeze retraced: the combined cap fell from $21.3B to $20.1B (-5.6%), PEPE led the decline at -16.9%, and SPX6900 was the week's only green close.

Method: prices are UTC daily closes from CoinMarketCap, CoinGlass, CoinLore and BitKan history pages; weekly change is close-to-close between the boundary dates (Aug 23 → Aug 30); the combined board cap sums our eight members' tracker caps on each boundary date. Every figure is re-derivable from the Sources links — that is the standard, and it is the only reason the numbers below are worth arguing with.

1. Core metrics — week-over-week

MetricAug 23Aug 30Change
Board combined market cap (8 tokens)$21.31B$20.11B-5.6%
DOGE close$0.09342$0.08210-12.1%
DOGE market cap$14.54B$14.07B-3.2%
Board equal-weighted close change——-8.7% avg (7 of 8 red)

Note the divergence between DOGE's price (-12.1%) and its market cap (-3.2%): tracker circulating-supply estimates shifted during the week, which is why we print both and let the reader see the seam rather than papering over it. The board cap inherits the same caveat in miniature.

2. The eight-token board — closes and weekly change

CoinAug 23 closeAug 30 closeWeekly change
SPX$0.466$0.539+15.7%
WIF$0.2023$0.1894-6.4%
SHIB$0.000005545$0.000004952-10.7%
FLOKI$0.00002691$0.0000239-11.2%
DOGE$0.09342$0.08210-12.1%
PENGU$0.00994$0.00861-13.4%
BONK$0.00000327$0.00000279-14.7%
PEPE$0.000004099$0.000003405-16.9%

The table is sorted by weekly change, best to worst, and the ordering is the story: the two names that fell least were the two whose squeeze-day move unwound least. SPX sat the squeeze out (mid-range on August 21, the board's only gainer at +15.7%), and WIF's +21.2% squeeze day came with the board's smallest give-back (-6.4%).

3. What the shape of the week says

  • The squeeze retraced almost exactly. August 21's single-day prints — PEPE +28.6%, WIF +21.2%, SHIB +19.8%, DOGE +13.9% — were followed by a week that gave back 60–100% of each move. Squeeze highs get retraced; the only question is the fraction, and this week's answer was 'most of it'.
  • The decline was orderly. No board member printed a single day worse than -7.1% (PEPE, Aug 30). Washouts of this shape — several mid-size red days rather than one capitulation — usually mark positions changing hands rather than leverage purging.
  • Volume starved into the low. DOGE's washout-day volume was $311.8M against $3.4B at the squeeze peak — an 11x decay. The market cared progressively less as price fell, the opposite of capitulation's signature.
  • SPX was the exception with an asterisk. Its +15.7% week included an +18.2% day and a -11.8% day (CoinGlass). Green, yes — but the board's highest volatility cut both ways all week.

4. Three-week pattern: squeeze, unwind, base

WeekBoard capWeek changeCharacter
Aug 10–16≈$16.8B—Mid-August base
Aug 17–23$21.31B+26.9% (est. from base)The Aug 21 squeeze
Aug 24–30$20.11B-5.6%Orderly retracement; 7 of 8 red

The retracement left the board at $20.11B — 5.6% under the squeeze-week close, but still 19.8% above the mid-August base. The market gave back most of a week, none of a month. Whether that base holds is the only question next week's data answers first.

5. Supply-side watch

  • PEPE's mid-whale cohort began distributing on August 25 — later quantified by Santiment at ≈80B tokens over the following fortnight, against only 5.06B of retail accumulation (a ~15.8-to-1 imbalance). The -16.9% week now has its supply-side explanation.
  • SHIB's exchange reserves sat near 87.2 trillion — about 14.8% of the 589.24T circulating supply — with the $0.000005 line defended intraday but lost on the weekly close.
  • No custody-scale flows were verified in any of our sources this week; the board's move was price-driven, not flow-driven. The big flows came the following week.

6. What would change our read

  • A board close back above $21.3B would reclassify this week as noise within an uptrend rather than the first leg of a deeper unwind.
  • DOGE closing below $0.08 would break the round-number floor beneath the entire August rally.
  • PEPE's cohort selling continuing (confirmable via Santiment's next publication) would keep a hard cap on any PEPE recovery attempt.
  • A repeat of August 21-style volume without follow-through — a second squeeze high — would mark a double top against $0.0934 for DOGE.

7. Methodology & data notes

  • Closing prices: CoinMarketCap (DOGE, SHIB, PEPE), CoinGlass (PENGU, SPX, WIF), CoinLore (FLOKI), BitKan/TokenInsight (BONK). History pages linked in Sources.
  • Board cap = sum of member caps on each tracker's own figure. BONK's cap varies by up to ~15% across trackers (circulating-supply estimates); we use close × ~88.8T consistently.
  • The board: DOGE, SHIB, PEPE, PENGU, SPX, BONK, FLOKI, WIF — the eight largest meme assets excluding wrapped/pegged duplicates (Forbes category order).
  • Weekly change is close-to-close between Aug 23 and Aug 30 UTC closes. No interpolation; where a tracker's cap conflicts with its own price, we print both and flag the seam.

FAQ

Why does DOGE's price fall 12.1% but its market cap only 3.2%?

Because market cap is price times circulating supply, and the trackers' supply estimates for DOGE shifted during the week. When the two series diverge, we print both and flag the seam — a data report that silently picks one number would be choosing an answer instead of showing the measurement.

Is the board sorted by weekly change on purpose?

Yes. Sorting by performance instead of market cap makes the week's structure visible: the two survivors were the two non-participants in the August 21 squeeze. A market-cap-sorted table would hide that ordering entirely.

What does 'orderly decline' actually mean?

No single day worse than -7.1% on any board member, and volume decaying into the low rather than spiking. Capitulation looks like one massive red day on record volume; this was the opposite — several mid-size days on fading volume, which reads as positions changing hands rather than leverage purging.

How is the PEPE whale story verifiable?

Through Santiment's wallet-cohort data, published September 10 and covering from August 25: wallets holding 10M–100M PEPE offloaded ≈80B tokens while smaller wallets accumulated only 5.06B. We print both dates — when the selling happened and when it became checkable — because pretending to have known mid-week would be the actual fabrication.

How do I verify the -5.6% board figure?

Sum the eight members' caps on Aug 23 closes from the linked history pages (≈$21.31B), then on Aug 30 closes (≈$20.11B). The percentage is arithmetic between the two sums. If your numbers differ, check which as-of dates and trackers you used — those are the only free variables.
