Meme Coin Monthly Report — August 2026
The eight-token board closed August at $20.11B — +19.8% above its mid-August base near $16.8B — but the path was the story: an August 21 squeeze day (PEPE +28.6%, WIF +21.2%, SHIB +19.8%, DOGE +13.9% on $3.4B of DOGE volume) and a washout week that gave most of it back. Every member still finished the month green.
1. The month in eight figures
| # | Figure | August 2026 | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Board combined cap, month close | $20.11B (Aug 30) | from a ≈$16.8B Aug 16 base: +19.8% |
| 2 | Month's highest weekly close | $21.31B (Aug 23) | the squeeze-week close |
| 3 | Final week | -5.6% (Aug 24–30) | 7 of 8 members red |
| 4 | Squeeze day, Aug 21 | PEPE +28.6%, WIF +21.2%, SHIB +19.8%, DOGE +13.9% | one session |
| 5 | DOGE volume on Aug 21 | $3.4B | the session's heaviest tape |
| 6 | Monthly advancers (Aug 16 → Aug 30) | 8 of 8 | every member green |
| 7 | Best / worst member | SPX +70.6% / FLOKI +6.7% | a 63.9-point spread |
| 8 | Board equal-weighted August move | +30.7% avg | vs +19.8% cap-weighted |
2. What August was
August was a violent month with a green ending. The eight-token board — DOGE, SHIB, PEPE, PENGU, SPX, BONK, FLOKI, WIF — ran from a mid-August base near $16.8B through the August 21 squeeze, printed its month high at the $21.31B August 23 weekly close, then washed out to $20.11B by August 30. Net result: +19.8% on the combined cap, +30.7% equal-weighted, eight of eight members green.
The two averages disagree by eleven points and the disagreement is the month's composition. DOGE carries roughly seventy percent of the board's cap and returned +18.2%, dragging the cap-weighted figure toward it; the smaller half of the board (SPX +70.6%, PENGU +45.7%, WIF +39.5%, PEPE +32.4%) did the heavy lifting. A month that looks orderly in the headline number was anything but underneath.
3. Week by week: how the month was built
| Week | Board cap (close) | Change | Character |
|---|---|---|---|
| Aug 10–16 (base) | ≈$16.8B | — | mid-August base of our close series |
| Aug 17–23 | $21.31B | +26.9% | the Aug 21 squeeze week; month high |
| Aug 24–30 | $20.11B | -5.6% | washout; 7 of 8 red; SPX only green |
One scope note, stated plainly: our published daily-close series begins at the August 16 base, so this report measures the month from there. We do not extrapolate the first half of August backwards to manufacture a cleaner calendar month — every figure here is a close we can link to, which is the standard the whole site runs on.
4. The August 21 squeeze, one month later
Single-session prints: PEPE +28.6%, WIF +21.2%, SHIB +19.8%, DOGE +13.9% (a $0.08042 → $0.09163 close-to-close day on $3.4B of DOGE volume, the board's heaviest tape of the month). At the squeeze high DOGE's cap touched $15.6B alone — a figure the board never revisited for the rest of the month.
What followed is the part worth keeping: the next five sessions gave back 60–100% of each of those moves. Squeeze highs get retraced — the only question is the fraction, and August's answer was 'most of it'. The full session-by-session anatomy, and how to tell a squeeze day from a trend day before it happens, is the August deep dive.
5. The full board — August closes and net move
| Asset | Aug 16 close | Aug 23 close | Aug 30 close | Net (Aug 16 →) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| SPX | $0.316 | $0.466 | $0.539 | +70.6% |
| PENGU | $0.00591 | $0.00994 | $0.00861 | +45.7% |
| WIF | $0.1358 | $0.2023 | $0.1894 | +39.5% |
| PEPE | $0.000002572 | $0.000004099 | $0.000003405 | +32.4% |
| BONK | $0.00000232 | $0.00000327 | $0.00000279 | +20.3% |
| DOGE | $0.06948 | $0.09342 | $0.08210 | +18.2% |
| SHIB | $0.00000443 | $0.000005545 | $0.000004952 | +11.8% |
| FLOKI | $0.0000224 | $0.00002691 | $0.0000239 | +6.7% |
Sorted best to worst, the spread runs from SPX's +70.6% to FLOKI's +6.7% — more than ten-to-one inside a board where everything finished green. Note who led: the one asset that skipped the squeeze (SPX was mid-range on August 21) also topped the month, while the squeeze's biggest one-day winner (PEPE +28.6%) finished mid-pack. One-day heroics and monthly leadership were different games in August.
6. Three consequences that follow from the month
- Frame discipline. The monthly board (8 of 8 green, +19.8%) and the final weekly board (1 of 8 green, -5.6%) pointed opposite ways on the same closing print. When the frames disagree this sharply, the level decides: $20.11B is above the $16.8B base, so August reads as an uptrend with a correction — not a top.
- Squeeze highs are selling data. Every August 21 print was retraced by 60–100% within a week. A session that outruns the board's volume regime is a liquidity event, not a re-rating; size accordingly.
- Dispersion is the signal. A ten-to-one spread between the best and worst green member means 'meme coins were up in August' is close to useless as a sentence. The board's composition moved the month, not the board.
7. What August leaves on the table
The handover is entirely August's own arithmetic, and this report stops at the August 30 close that ended it. The month closed at $20.11B on that print, +19.8% above the ≈$16.8B August 16 base, all eight members green, with a ten-to-one spread between the best and worst member. Two of the month's own prints are the lines it leaves standing. $20.11B is the monthly frame; $16.8B, the August 16 base, is the line that would mark the monthly gain as broken rather than held. The large-cap version of the same line is DOGE's own monthly close: its August net (+18.2%, from $0.06948 to $0.08210) kept it the board's quietest large member at roughly seventy percent of the cap, so a DOGE daily close under $0.08 is the last unfished level between the board and its August 16 baselines. August closed without settling which way any of them breaks; that is for the weeks after it, which are the weekly board's to report and not this month's to pre-empt.
8. Method and limits
Prices are UTC daily closes from CoinMarketCap (DOGE, SHIB, PEPE), CoinGlass (PENGU, SPX, WIF), CoinLore (FLOKI) and BitKan/TokenInsight (BONK) history pages; weekly change is close-to-close between boundary dates; the board cap sums the eight members' tracker caps on each boundary date. BONK's cap is computed as close × ~88.8T circulating (CoinGecko supply estimate) and carries a ≈ where trackers disagree by up to ~15%. The Aug 16 board base is stated as ≈$16.8B for the same reason. No close is ever interpolated. Every figure above is re-derivable from the Sources links in minutes.

FAQ
Is the monthly report separate from the weekly Market Intelligence?
Yes. The weekly board covers seven days of closes, breadth and rotation; the monthly report aggregates the weeks into the month's close with the squeeze anatomy and the full board table. Both sit in the Market Intelligence column, and the monthly is its own page rather than a section inside a weekly post.
Why does the month run from August 16 and not August 1?
Because our published daily-close series begins at the August 16 base, and we do not extrapolate backwards to manufacture a cleaner calendar month. Every figure in this report is a linked, re-derivable close; a comfortable-looking 'month from August 1' would have to be partly invented, which is exactly what this site refuses to do.
How do I verify the +19.8% figure?
Sum the eight members' caps on the August 30 closes (each history page is linked in Sources) — you should land near $20.11B — and compare against the ≈$16.8B August 16 base. The percentage is arithmetic on public numbers, not our model output. The one free variable is BONK's circulating supply, which we state explicitly.
The month ended +19.8% but the final week was -5.6%. Which frame wins?
Neither, on its own — the level decides. A monthly gain that survives a red final week is an uptrend with a correction; the same gain erased by that week would have been a top. August closed at $20.11B, above the $16.8B base, so the monthly frame held.
Why is the equal-weighted move (+30.7%) bigger than the cap move (+19.8%)?
Because DOGE is roughly seventy percent of the board's cap and returned +18.2%, anchoring the cap-weighted average, while the smaller half — SPX +70.6%, PENGU +45.7%, WIF +39.5% — pulled the equal-weighted figure up. The gap between the two averages is itself data: the month's gains were concentrated outside the largest member.
