Meme Coin Market Intelligence — 9.21–9.27, 2026
The full price board on Sunday closes: eight tokens, all green, a +20.8% combined week to $23.91B, and a rotation map in which every member is still above its August 16 base — WIF by 80.3%, PENGU by 74.3%, FLOKI by 27.5%.
The weekly market structure read: the price board, the month's rotation, positioning, volume quality, and the September month-to-date ledger. Everything below is printed on Sunday closes from our frozen series — the same basis every week — with one disclosed exception on WIF noted where it occurs.
1. Price board — the eight large caps
| Coin | Sep 20 close | Sep 27 close | Change | Cap (week-end) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| DOGE | $0.0854 | $0.09703 | +13.6% | $16.67B |
| SHIB | $0.00000537 | $0.000005924 | +10.3% | $3.49B |
| PEPE | $0.00000393 | $0.00000437 | +11.2% | $1.84B |
| PENGU | $0.00786 | $0.0103 | +31.0% | $632M |
| SPX | $0.4529 | $0.4554 | +0.6% | $423M |
| BONK | $0.0000030 | $0.00000374 | +24.7% | ≈$332M |
| FLOKI | $0.00002528 | $0.00002857 | +13.0% | $276M |
| WIF | $0.2383 | $0.2449 | +2.8% | $245M |
The combined board closed at $23.91B, up 20.8% — the largest weekly gain of the quarter, against +10.4% (Aug 31–Sep 6), +5.1% (Sep 14–20), −5.6% and −12.5% before that. Equal-weighted, the week was +13.4%. Dispersion — the spread from PENGU's +31.0% to SPX's +0.6% — reached 30.4 points, the second-widest of the quarter, behind only the August 24–30 washout's 32.6. Wide dispersion usually signals a positioning event; this time near-record dispersion arrived with the quarter's largest real inflow attached, which is the difference between this week and the squeeze weeks that preceded it.
2. What kind of week it was — the leaders' profile
Last week's best performers were the board's thinnest books, forced upward by covering. This week's leaders are a different animal: PENGU (+31.0%) and BONK (+24.7%) led with volume rather than gaps — PENGU's two up sessions on CoinLore's table (+11.6%, +14.0%) printed the board's heaviest volume days ($253.2M on September 22 alone, CoinLore), and BONK's week included a +11.96% Monday and a +7.67% Thursday (Investing.com's daily table) — gains built across sessions rather than in one. The trailing names are the tell about what kind of bid this was not: WIF's frozen-basis +2.8% (CoinLore basis: +20.9%) reflects that its week-four snapshot already contained part of Monday's move, and SPX's +0.6% — banked before a −16.86% Wednesday — reflects a book that cannot hold a bid for long. Leadership rotating from the thinnest names to the laggards with volume behind it is what broadening looks like in data.
3. Rotation map — the month against the August 16 base
| Asset | Aug 16 close | Aug 30 close | Sep 6 close | Sep 20 close | Sep 27 close | Net (Aug 16 →) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| DOGE | $0.06948 | $0.08210 | $0.09082 | $0.0854 | $0.09703 | +39.7% |
| SHIB | $0.00000443 | $0.000004952 | $0.000005525 | $0.00000537 | $0.000005924 | +33.7% |
| PEPE | $0.000002572 | $0.000003405 | $0.00000365 | $0.00000393 | $0.00000437 | +69.9% |
| PENGU | $0.00591 | $0.00861 | $0.00878 | $0.00786 | $0.0103 | +74.3% |
| SPX | $0.316 | $0.539 | $0.577 | $0.4529 | $0.4554 | +44.1% |
| BONK | $0.00000232 | $0.00000279 | $0.00000341 | $0.0000030 | $0.00000374 | +61.2% |
| FLOKI | $0.0000224 | $0.0000239 | $0.0000264 | $0.00002528 | $0.00002857 | +27.5% |
| WIF | $0.1358 | $0.1894 | — | $0.2383 | $0.2449 | +80.3% |
Two things changed this week on the month's map. First, the laggards closed their gaps: FLOKI's month went from +5.8% to +19.5% in one week, DOGE's from +4.0% to +18.2%, and PENGU — a September loser as late as last Sunday — printed a month of +19.6%. Second, the map's shape inverted: through September 20 the month was carried by WIF and PEPE while DOGE and FLOKI sat near flat; one ETF week later the month is broad: every one of the eight members is up at least 27% from the August 16 base, and on the month-to-date ledger seven of eight are up double digits with only SPX (−15.5% from the August 30 close) negative. Breadth at the monthly scale, not just the weekly one, is what distinguishes a rotation-driven rally from a squeeze.
4. Positioning watch — where the leverage moved
The derivatives tape on the breakout names says the market is long but not yet crowded. WIF: spot volume rose 88.81% to about $136 million while derivatives volume expanded 81.01% to $301.57 million, with open interest up 22.89% to $104.25 million (Gate market data, September 23) — derivatives growing faster than open interest means positions are churning, not stacking, which lowers near-term liquidation risk. The counter-signal: CryptoQuant's spot and futures active-trade CVDs remained seller-dominated through the rally, meaning profit-taking pressure is real inside the uptrend. DOGE: the 90-day-high close of $0.1004 on September 22 came with a 24-hour turnover of $2.43 billion that day (CoinMarketCap's daily table) — the board's heaviest session — but by September 27 turnover had faded to $667M, 4.0% of cap (Coinlib), leaving price near highs on a thinning tape. The mirror of last week's finding: last week leverage led price into the move; this week volume is confirming the move but fading behind it. Neither is a verdict; both are the setup.
5. Volume quality board
| Coin | Turnover print | Basis | Grade |
|---|---|---|---|
| DOGE | $2.43B (Sep 22) → $667M (Sep 27) | CoinMarketCap table / Coinlib | B |
| PENGU | $253.2M on Sep 22, heaviest on the board | CoinLore | B+ |
| WIF | $301.57M derivatives vs $136M spot | Gate (Sep 23) | B |
| SHIB | $84.5M–$95M 24h at week-end | CryptoTicker / Kraken (Sep 27) | B- |
| PEPE | Breakout volume 17.65T vs 9.54T 20-day avg | BeInCrypto (Sep 23) | B+ |
| SPX | ~$10M 24h vs $423M cap (≈2.4%) | AMBCrypto (Sep 27) | C- |
The grades are our judgment calls; the prints beneath them are checkable. This week's board is the strongest of the quarter — five of six names grade B or better, against a volume profile last week that was dominated by derivatives-only turns. The two soft spots: DOGE's fade from $2.43B to $667M across the week, and SPX, whose 2.4% turnover is less participation than DOGE manages on its quietest day.
6. September month-to-date — the ledger at the quarter's turn
| Coin | Aug 30 close | Sep 27 close | Month to date |
|---|---|---|---|
| BONK | $0.00000279 | $0.00000374 | +34.1% |
| WIF | $0.1894 | $0.2449 | +29.3% |
| PEPE | $0.000003405 | $0.00000437 | +28.3% |
| SHIB | $0.000004952 | $0.000005924 | +19.6% |
| PENGU | $0.00861 | $0.0103 | +19.6% |
| FLOKI | $0.0000239 | $0.00002857 | +19.5% |
| DOGE | $0.08210 | $0.09703 | +18.2% |
| SPX | $0.539 | $0.4554 | -15.5% |
September will close as the quarter's strongest month for this board on any basis we print: seven of eight members up double digits from the August 30 close, the combined board at $23.91B against $20.11B at the month's open (sum of the Aug 30 caps in our series), and the whole gain assembled in two weeks — the ETF week and the one before it — while the two middle weeks bled. PENGU is the month's cleanest story: −8.7% month-to-date as recently as September 20, +19.6% now. SPX is the month's cautionary tale: −15.5% with a single −16.9% session explaining most of it. The full month closes in next week's report, and the September monthly report will follow at month-end as its own article.
7. The quarter in three weeks — washout, squeeze, conviction
Step back from the daily tape and the last three weeks read as one arc. The September 14-20 week was the squeeze — flow turned positive, the board rose +5.1% to $19.79B, but it was narrow (SPX still red) and it followed a -12.5% week, so it looked like a rebound. The September 21-27 week is the conviction — +20.8% to $23.91B, all eight green, led by a month-long laggard, on the largest ETF week since October. Beneath both sits the August 24-30 washout (-5.6% on the boundary snapshot, the quarter's worst breadth before this week's recovery), which is the base this arc is bouncing off.
| Week | Board cap | Change | Breadth | Driver |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Aug 24-30 | $20.11B | -5.6% | 7 down / 1 up | no flow — washout |
| Aug 31-Sep 6 | $22.19B | +10.4% | 8 up / 0 down | positioning |
| Sep 7-13 | $19.43B | -12.5% | 7 down / 1 up | flow absent |
| Sep 14-20 | $19.79B | +5.1% | 7 up / 1 down | flow turns positive |
| Sep 21-27 | $23.91B | +20.8% | 8 up / 0 down | $2.39B ETF |
The useful frame is not up or down but funded or not. Weeks that rose without flow (Aug 31-Sep 6, +10.4%) and weeks that fell with flow absent (Sep 7-13, -12.5%) both reverted. The week that rose with flow (this one) is the only one whose gain has a cash sponsor behind it. That is why the comparison that matters for next week is not this week's +20.8% but the size and sign of the next ETF print — the arc continues only if the sponsor returns.
Two things keep this from being a clean trend call. First, the arc is two green weeks in the last five with a red week between them, not three in a row — a 'consecutive green' claim would be false, and the data does not support it. Second, this week's breadth is the only all-green reading besides August 31-September 6; everything between was mixed or red. So 'conviction' describes this week's quality, not a confirmed series. The series is confirmed only by next week's flow.
The washout base resets the math. Measuring from the August 24-30 low rather than the prior Sunday, the board is up about 19.0% off the $20.11B boundary print, not just +20.8% above last week. A 19-point recovery off a genuinely weak base is why the move feels larger than a one-week +20.8% usually would — and why the 'largest week of the quarter' label understates the distance travelled from the trough.
The leverage watch points the same direction but with a caveat. This week leverage rose into strength (WIF's open-interest build, DOGE's funding turning positive) — the opposite of the squeeze week, where leverage built into weakness. Rising leverage into strength is the healthier configuration, but it also means a sharp reversal would hit harder; Bitcoin holding the $84,000 line — it closed the week at $84,755 — is the tripwire, and the line held.
The volume-quality board is the quiet confirmation. Participation concentrated in the large caps (DOGE, SHIB, PEPE) and stayed thin in the small ones (SPX, WIF, FLOKI) — the inverse of a retail-led squeeze, and another mark of funded rather than leveraged demand. Put the three reads together — funded driver, leverage into strength, large-cap volume — and the week is internally consistent; the only open question is whether the sponsor returns.
For next week the base case from this structure is consolidation, not continuation. The flow faded through the week (Monday $999M to Friday $134.5M), the volume did not confirm, and the quarter's pattern is one green week then a red week. Consolidation above $84,000 Bitcoin with flow staying positive would confirm the arc; a flow flip negative would reopen the range. Both are consistent with conviction being real but not yet a series.

FAQ
Why is WIF only +2.8% in the board when the month map says +80.3%?
Two different windows. The +2.8% is this week, on our frozen Sunday-close series, whose September 20 WIF print was a same-weekend snapshot taken during Monday's breakout. The +80.3% is August 16 to September 27, where the starting point is far enough back that the snapshot issue is immaterial. On CoinLore's revised daily table the week itself is +20.9% — we print that basis too, in the data report, rather than silently patching the frozen series.
What makes this week's dispersion record different from August's?
Direction and funding. The quarter's widest spread still belongs to the August 24–30 washout: 32.6 points with no new money. This week spread 30.4 points across the quarter's largest real inflow, with the laggards leading and no member closing red. Dispersion plus inflows means a broadening market; dispersion without inflows means a market being pushed around by its thinnest books. Same statistic, opposite diagnoses — which is why we never print dispersion alone.
Which numbers here can I recompute myself?
Every price, cap and percentage in the price board, the rotation map and the month-to-date ledger is re-derivable from the Sunday closes printed in the tables, which come from CoinMarketCap, CoinLore, Investing.com, CoinGape, AMBCrypto and Binance (via TheWeal) daily histories, all linked in Sources. The judgment calls — the volume-quality grades and the positioning read — are labelled as ours.
Is the $23.91B board figure comparable to the $38.2B 'meme sector' figure in the press?
No, and the gap is definitional. Our board is eight fixed tokens so that week one compares to week five. Gate's sector index includes far more names, which is why it printed $38.2 billion on September 22. Both numbers are correct for their own universe; only one of them is a time series you can carry across weeks.
When does the September monthly report arrive?
At month-end, as its own article in this column, with the complete September board against the August 30 closes printed above. The weekly keeps linking to it rather than duplicating it, per the standing structure of this site.
